- highest grossing film of Pakistan of all time
- Picture at 31st Cairo International Film
- the first Pakistani film to officially release in India after 40 years.
The film explores the concept of the Muslim identity since 9/11,
considering their portrayal by the media since that event and raises many
controversial questions boggling the minds of modern Muslims. It explores
the tension every modern Muslim faces between western liberalism and
fundamentalism. It is also a touching drama about family and love. A
must-see!

Film night -
13/11/2006 20:00
m £1, n/m £1.50
Winstanley Lecture Theatre, Trinity College
A chance to relax and watch a film, maybe learn something new if your history is a bit hazy, or just to meet up together again! We're showing "Jinnah" in Trinity College on Monday, as usual just email Aseer if you can come. Drinks and snacks will be served.
"Those familiar with Pakistan's history will be most likely to appreciate this elaborate tribute to Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the man who created the Muslim nation in the wake of Great Britain's relinquishment of control over India. The story begins on a fantastical note, as an ailing Jinnah (Christopher Lee) expires and then finds himself in a heavenly place awaiting final judgment on his deeds. That could take some time, for the celestial bureaucrats in charge have misplaced Jinnah's file and the whole heavenly computer network is down. With nothing but time on his hands, Jinnah answers the many questions of his guide (Shashi Kapoor). His responses comprise the main story. Jinnah's tale begins in 1947 as England prepares to grant India its freedom. Muslims have always been a minority in the diverse country and Jinnah wants to create a country especially for them. The Muslim leader's nemesis, Viceroy Mountbatten (James Fox) finds Jinnah's proposal disturbing and so attempts to convince Ghandi (Sam Dastor) and Nehru (Robert Ashby) to dissuade Jinnah from starting more trouble, but it is to no avail. The story then jumps backward to 1916 when Jinnah (played as a young man by Richard Lintern) served as a prominent member of the India Congress Party. It was during this time that he married a beautiful Parsee (Indira Varma). As the guide continues his questions, a deeper understanding of Jinnah and the bloody events surrounding the genesis of Pakistan emerges."

Future Of The Brit-Pak
24/11/2000 18:45
£Free
Winstanely Lecture Theatre, Trinity College
The British Identity. The Pakistani Identity. Is the hybrid compatible with either and what is the future? With Navid Akhtar, a producer from the BBC.
This week's event is a discussion about an issue that is close to many of our hearts and has been the cause of many harmful misunderstandings between many people.
If you have roots from a country with a culture that clashes with the western culture (regardless of whether it is Pakistani, Indian, Bengali or anything else), conflicts and confusion will undoubtely arise. Trying to make two clashing cultures compliment each other is not an easy task, but then is it even possible?
Which identity do you assume and do you actually have a choice? Will you ever be fully accepted by either culture? Is this new Brit-Pak culture acceptable by the British and Pakstani? Does it actually have a future or will it slowly disintegrate?
How do YOU identify yourself?
Whether you are Pakistani, Indian, Bengali, British or a mixture, you will have a view on this topic. Come along and hear the views from a British born Pakistani and a born and bred Pakistani..... air your own personal views about your own identity..... this promises to be an interesting evening.
